Most people would think that all wine is natural because it comes from grapes. But the truth is more than 300 ingredients can be added to wine that does not have to be declared on the label. There can be artificial colours; there can be artificial flavours, extra sugar, and all kinds of things can go into the wine. It’s almost like people choose to eat organic food because they want to know what goes into the body so now people are choosing to drink natural wine because they want something made without herbicides, pesticides and without additives.

Natural wine is trendy now, but it is not new. Since thousands of years ago, people have been making fermented grape juice without adding additive. Most people think that natural wine is a new thing, but it is the traditional way to make wine, its conventional wine that is actually new.

Some winemakers add sulfites, preservation and stabilizer that winemakers have been using longer than any other additive. The sulfites ensure the taste of the Sulphites in wine to stay roughly the same as it did when it is put in the bottle. The natural winemakers use either no sulfites or small quantities while conventional winemakers use up to 10 times as much. The conventional winemakers add sulfites in the grapes to kill natural yeasts and add throughout the winemaking process while natural winemakers just a little bit before bottling.

Natural wine costs more than the conventional wine; it cost around $15 dollar a bottle where as conventional wine can find it for $5 to $10 a bottle. So similar again to organic food, it’s a little more expensive. People have to make a decision on what they want to do. Often times, they get what they pay for. Of course, many people spend $15 and much more for a regular bottle of wine, so to think twice natural wine is not that expensive, but it is not more than $5 a bottle.
